8. Misplacing or Losing Things
Most family members begin to notice their loved one showing signs of Alzheimer’s Disease when they constantly lose or misplace everyday items. For example, the remote control ends up in the freezer, the car keys are still on the doorknob, eyeglasses have been put in the dishwasher, or their wallet is hidden because they think someone is trying to steal it. This forgetfulness and paranoia is often the result of neurological pathways becoming damaged as this disease progresses. This doesn’t only cause the sufferer to put things where they don’t belong but it also causes them to forget where they put things.
If you’ve noticed your loved one misplacing things or losing them quite frequently, don’t automatically be alarmed. It’s common for older individuals to lose things as they get older and still live healthy lives. However, if this sign is combined with being suspicious or aggravated, then it could be something more alarming. Other signs to look out for that are related to misplacing objects include: hoarding items, always trying to find something, spending a lot of time locating something, not recalling where things go, and forgetting what they are looking for.
