Skin Problems

The largest organ of the body is skin and since diabetes affects every organ in the body, skin is also compromised. This includes both appearance and sensations. Skin complications are present in approximately 30 % of type 2 diabetics. Skin problems are often the first visible signs of diabetes. Existing skin conditions can worsen and new ones can develop.

Types of skin conditions caused by diabetes are typically either bacterial or fungal. Chronic itch particularly in warm folds of the skin, under breasts , in the groin, in the armpits, in the corner of the mouth and under the foreskin are common indicators of diabetes. Another indicator may be dark velvety patches of skin in the folds and creases of the body. This is called acanthosis nigricans and may be a sign of insulin resistance. Changes to the skin’s collagen can occur. High blood sugar levels reduce the blood flow to the skin. This can damage blood vessels and nerves. This may result in darkened texture, appearance and ability to heal.
