10. Reduced Alcohol Tolerance

One result of being on the keto diet which some might see as a benefit is the fact that you might find that your alcohol tolerance is decreased. Therefore, we would suggest that you be especially cautious when you partake in drinking after first starting the keto diet. Some say that you need half as many drinks than you would have had to have before starting the keto diet. Your liver and your wallet might thank you.

The effect of being on the keto diet on the amount of alcohol that you can handle is unclear. Some think that it has to do with your liver having the difficult job of having to produce ketones, which makes it more difficult for it to be able to burn the alcohol that you are drinking. This results in a slower process of the alcohol you are drinking.

Others still believe that instead this has to due with how sugar and alcohol are broken down during a similar process in the lever. Lowering your sugar intake can lead to your body being less able to process alcohol which should have a similar influence as simply drinking less.

Regardless of the reason, be careful. Doing a ton of shots might be low carb (depending on what you are drinking). However, that does not mean that you should use this as an excuse to get alcohol poisoning. And, of course, don’t drink and drive.
