Numbness and Tingling
Nerve damage is common to diabetes. Warning signs may include a feeling of numbness, tingling, of pins and needles in the arms, hands, legs and feet. There may be a feeling of mild burning. There may be pain in the toes. Symptoms are dependent on which nerves are damaged and develop gradually; they may seem like minor and infrequent pains at first but as the damage increases symptoms may grow.
You should pay attention to and take note of any pain, numbness, weakness or tingling – even if it seems insignificant. Other symptoms may include muscle weakness, muscle cramping or twitching, insensitivity to pain or temperature, extreme sensitivity to even the lightest touch. Symptoms may get worse at night.
