4. Sonia Sotomayor — Type 1
Although not a celebrity in the traditional sense (she’s no singer or actress), Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor has also been in spotlight for her experience with diabetes. Diagnosed in childhood with Type 1 diabetes means that she has been managing her symptoms for over 50 years. Things have changed in the time since she was a child with diabetes. For example, at the time, it was necessary to boil the needles needed for her insulin injections. Since then, technological advances have allowed Sotomayor to have the option of glucose tablets (specifically the Tropical Blast flavor which can be found in her office, at the bench, and in the conference rooms at the Supreme Court offices).
If you are in hopes of learning more about her experience, you are in luck. Sotomayor has given multiple interviews, which are accessible online, and has also written a book about her life with diabetes titled My Beloved World.
