Medications

There are a number of medications that are prescribed to thin the blood or prevent blood clots from gathering or to keep ones that have formed from getting any bigger. Some common prescriptions like warfarin and heparin are meant to deal with issues like deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and artial fibrillation.

Then there are drugs like Plavix, Effient, and Persantine that are prescribed for those with a chance of heart attack, peripheral vascular disease, or stroke. Unfortunately, when the blood is thinned, this can have a negative impact on red blood cell levels. Other medications damage the gastric wall, causing internal bleeding.
