Negative Health Effects of Overeating at Thanksgiving

Food may backup in the digestive tract

Ever experienced a sour or acidic taste or even fine particles from undigested food in your mouth after a large meal? That is typically a sign of a backflow of food or liquid. And there is a reason for this. There is a valve in the esophagus called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). It allows food to pass through to the stomach for digestion. Once food exits the esophagus, the LES closes to prevent food or gastric juices to back up (reflux) into the esophagus. Overeating increases the risk of a backflow of contents from the stomach. If you trouble with acid reflux or gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), you are more likely to have trouble keeping food in your stomach after overeating.
