Hirsutism – Unwanted Hair Growth in Women

Risk Factors

Some women are more at risk of getting this condition if they fall into the following categories:

Genetics. There are several hereditary conditions that may cause hirsutism, such as the aforementioned congenital adrenal hyperlasia and PCOS. Other genetic disorders may affect the ability of the ovaries to produce the correct amount of sex hormones as well.

Ancestry. Certain populations throughout the world tend to develop hirsutism are a higher rate than others. Those groups include those of Mediterranean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern descent.

Obesity. Being overweight or obese may cause an increase in androgen production in women, leading to hirsutism or even worsening the condition.

Medications. Women who are being treated for various medical problems, like endometriosis, or those who are on depression medication, steroids, or prednisone are at risk of developing hirsutism.
