    Risk Factors

Some women are more at risk of getting this condition if they fall into the following categories:

    • Ancestry. Certain populations throughout the world tend to develop hirsutism are a higher rate than others. Those groups include those of Mediterranean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern descent.

    • Obesity. Being overweight or obese may cause an increase in androgen production in women, leading to hirsutism or even worsening the condition.

    • Medications. Women who are being treated for various medical problems, like endometriosis, or those who are on depression medication, steroids, or prednisone are at risk of developing hirsutism.
