Don’t Drink Alcohol Without Eating
You might be tempted to forego eating a lot of food so you can enjoy more cocktails, but that is unwise. For diabetics, drinking on an empty stomach can have a number of negative consequences. Consuming alcohol can cause low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. Even a moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages can cause blood glucose to plummet, especially when you have nothing else in your stomach.
Prior to drinking, test your blood glucose levels. You don’t want your blood sugar to be low before drinking. Eat some carbohydrates prior to drinking, as well as some slow digesting fats. Also, drink responsibly. Diabetics should limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Keep in mind that one drink is 1 ounce for distilled spirit, 12 ounces for beer, and 4 ounces for wine.
