Monitor Wine Consumption
Do you tend to drink bottles of wine throughout the holidays? You are not alone. But, do you know how much sugar is in wine? Red wine is the best for diabetics, because it has about 0.9 grams of sugar per serving. White wine has around 1.4 grams of sugar. Diabetics should avoid dessert wines and rosé wine, because one serving has around 7.5 grams of sugar.
This means that 2-3 glasses of wine can contain around three teaspoons of sugar, which is already half of the recommended daily intake (RDI) for sugar. For diabetics, this will cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. Alcohol can also influence how your medications affect you. Certain medications can inhibit the way the liver breaks down proteins, leading to hypoglycemia—a potentially dangerous condition that can cause symptoms that resemble intoxication.
