The Early Signs of Menopause

Sore Breasts (Gynecomastia)

Menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause often lead to hormonal changes that lead to water retention and sore, swollen breasts, also known as gynecomastia. Though it doesn’t happen to all women, if you find yourself aching in the chest, know that it’s a sign your body is undergoing changes. Buy yourself some comfortable bras with extra padding and avoid any foods that lead to water retention and bloating, such as salty snacks and too much caffeine.

Keep in mind that unlike a menstruation cycle where breast tenderness can be caused by PMS, sore breasts during perimenopause can happen at any time. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, where even the slightest touch makes you wince. If your sore breasts are preventing you from doing daily activities, it is best to talk to your doctor. You might be prescribed a hormone medication, cream, or another over-the-counter medication to help combat the sore breast tissue.
