Restless Legs Syndrome
A more rare sleep disorder, affecting about 10% of the American adult population, Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS is a disorder of the nervous system that causes the sufferer to feel the need to move their limbs during sleep or rest. RLS often runs in families (pun intended). Pregnant women and those on certain medications are more likely to suffer from RLS. Picture your family pooch kicking around in his sleep and this will give you an idea of what it looks like for someone with RLS, kicking or tossing almost constantly on any given night. Although medication is prescribed in more extreme cases, less severe cases are usually treated with regular exercise and a decreased intake of caffeine and alcohol.
