Coffee
While science has been back and forth about coffee over the years, there is no denying that it is an antioxidant-rich beverage. The two main parts of coffee—the antioxidants and caffeine—are beneficial to the brain.
Caffeine, for starters, when consumed in moderation has the following positive effects:
• Keeps the brain alert by blocking a chemical called adenosine, which makes you tired;
• Improves your mood by boosting serotonin and other neurotransmitters;
• Boosts your concentration.
Coffee also has been shown in studies to improve brain health and reduce the risk of building the plaque in the brain that causes Alzheimer’s disease. This is thought to be due to the antioxidants in coffee that reduce free radicals in the body. If you don’t want to start drinking coffee, you can get the same flavonols and caffeine from dark chocolate, which is also on this list!
