Common Causes of Low Back Pain

Scoliosis

Although scoliosis counts for less than 1-percent of all lower back pain cases, it is still worth mentioning. Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that can cause minor to major muscular imbalances in the abdominal and back muscles. Idiopathic scoliosis, which has no discernible cause, is the most common type seen in adolescent children. Girls are more prone to developing scoliosis than boys.

Treatment for scoliosis depends on the degree of abnormal spinal curvature. Braces are the usual treatment for individuals who have a curvature between 25-40-degrees, but bracing doesn’t always help. Should an individual suffer from a curvature that is greater than 40-degrees, surgery is considered. However, this amount of curvature is rare and is often a symptom of some other underlying spinal condition. Spinal fusion can be used to prevent the spinal curvature from worsening over time but does not perfectly straighten the spine.
