Common Causes of Low Back Pain

Ruptured Discs

Ruptured or herniated discs are another common cause of low back pain. The discs between the vertebrae are susceptible to receiving trauma and becoming compressed to the point of rupture. Pressure is then placed on the nerves within the spinal column, causing significant pain. If you have a ruptured disc, you might also experience numbness or weakness in the lower extremities.

Ruptured discs heal with bed rest, over-the-counter pain medication (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen), muscle relaxers, narcotic pain relievers (only if necessary), and physical therapy. Should there be significant inflammation, an epidural steroid injection may be administered. Surgery is considered a last resort.
