Stage fright

As we mentioned earlier, it is not uncommon to experience anxiety and nerves before public speaking or being the center of attention. However, for some, this fear is so extreme that it is impossible to overcome, regardless of the amount of preparation or positive self-talk before hand. If you happen to relate, you could potentially have social phobia, which is more commonly known as social anxiety disorder.

This fear can have such a negative influence that it can lead to a total life disruption. Nothing else seems to matter and you might find yourself worrying for days, or even weeks, about the upcoming presentation or event. What’s more is that for those with social anxiety, even if they are able to overcome their fears in the moment, their anxiety does not simply vanish. Often, they ruminate about their performance, sometimes worrying excessively about a small mistake or mispronunciation. Another problem for these individuals is that they often experience physiological symptoms such as blushing and excessive sweating, which is just another thing for them to worry about!
