Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is when the ligament that runs from the hip to the outside of the thigh and eventually connects with the shin, also known as the iliotibial or IT band, becomes inflamed. Runners will often develop ITBS because of overuse, but cycling, hiking, and resistance training can also spur the condition. Although the conditoin occurs in a ligament that attaches to the hip and shin, it is the most typical cause of lateral knee pain. IT Band Syndrome happens when there is repeated friction of the IT band against the side of the knee.

A common symptom of ITBS would be a pain that spreads across the outer lateral side of the knee. Running downhill becomes rather difficult and painful. Other signs include weakness when moving the leg sideways.

Treatment for iliotibial band syndrome usually includes RICE, anti-inflammatory medications, strengthening and stretching as prescribed by a physical therapist, massage, and acupuncture.
