Prepatellar Bursitis

There are several bursa, or fluid-filled sacs, around the knee joint. These bursa are meant to cushion the knee and reduce the amount of friction, but they are susceptible to irritation. Prepatellar bursitis refers to the inflammation of the bursa that sits in front of the kneecap. Sometimes called housemaid’s knee, prepatellar bursitis often happens to those who kneel often. Therefore, roofers, carpet layers, and other laborers will finding themselves suffering from this form of bursitis. Sudden injuries, like falls, slips, and direct blows to the kneecap can also cause prepatellar bursitis.

You can suspect that you have prepatellar bursitis when you experience pain in front of the patella, redness, swelling, and difficulty when bending the knee, kneeling, and walking. Sometimes, the bursa can become infected, and you can develop a fever.

If you are on your knees during work, you should wear knee pads as a precautionary measure.
