Diverticulitis

Many people who lack fiber in their diet are at risk of developing diverticulitis. The condition occurs when tiny sacs or pouches lining the large intestine, known as diverticula, become inflamed. Whenever something passes through the large intestine, such as waste passing through the colon, the diverticula can swell or become infected.

This infection will cause pain, along with stomach cramps, bleeding from the rectum, abscesses, and bloody stool. Severe cases oftentimes result in perforations within the intestines that are considered a medical emergency and need to be swiftly treated in the ER.
