Gallstones

A gallstone is when deposits of bile and other liquids start to harden and get stuck in the gallbladder, causing inflammation and abdominal pain. The gallbladder is known for storing and sending bile to the stomach to break down fats in the stomach. Whenever the ducts are congested with gallstones, bile cannot be released, and this can cause excessive pain on the right side of the abdomen.

Pain from gallstones often happens after a fatty or rich meal and can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Gallstones are fairly common and easy to treat, but if they are not recognized early and left in the gallbladder for too long, they can become serious. Symptoms of gallstones include pain in the right side of the body, such as the right shoulder, between the shoulder blades, around the breastbone, as well as vomiting and intense nausea.
