Arthritis
Perhaps the most common pain associated with aging comes from arthritis, also known as joint pain. Arthritis can be felt in any joint of the body, but it frequently occurs in the fingers, wrists, hips, knees, and feet. One of the reasons older people develop arthritis is the breakdown of cartilage between joints. Arthritis can also be the result of injury or a history of physically demanding, vigorous activity, either from sports or work in construction and the like.
The key to lessening the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis is to remain as active as possible. While this doesn’t mean you have to start running or cycling for miles like you did when you were young, it does mean committing to a lifestyle where you are up and moving around instead of being sedentary. Practice yoga, go swimming, do a dance class, or even do housework and gardening. You can also consider massage or acupuncture to reduce swelling and promote circulation around the affected joints.
