Common Causes of Low Back Pain

Sciatica

The compression of the longest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve, leads to a condition called sciatica. Pain will be felt in the low back, buttocks, and down the affected leg. The pain is described as burning or shocking that radiates downward. Numbness and weakness of the leg is also associated with sciatica.

Treatment for this condition is non-invasive. Individuals are prescribed PRICE—protecting, resting, icing, compressing, and elevating—as well as OTC pain relievers, and, if needed, muscle relaxants. More severe cases might require an epidural steroid injection to decrease inflammation in the nerve. Other holistic treatments that may provide relief include acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), physical therapy and massage.
