Molasses

Did you know that molasses is essentially the “leftovers” from the refining process used to make white sugar? While it does come from sugar cane, it differs from the white stuff in many ways. Molasses is rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium and vitamin B6.

Molasses is better for baking than maple syrup, as it is much thicker and a little will go a long way. However, it is also less versatile than some of the other sweeteners we’ve mentioned. When choosing molasses, opt for blackstrap molasses, which is obtained from the last step in the refining process and contains the highest concentration of nutrients.
