Potassium is an important mineral in our diets. Without potassium, our bodies wouldn’t be able to transport nutrients into cells. It would also be impossible for nerves and muscles to communicate effectively. Potassium also plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure alongside other electrolytes like sodium and minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Bananas are the best source of potassium according to most people. In fact, most people think bananas are the only adequate source of potassium. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most fruits have at least 422 milligrams of potassium or approximately 9% of the daily recommended intake of 4,700 milligrams. Not too bad considering most people depend heavily on bananas. But you can do better once you discover the 13 foods discussed below, all of which offer more potassium than bananas.

    Sweet potato

A medium-sized sweet potato contains 542 milligrams of potassium. Sweet potatoes are also rich in Vitamin A. Besides being rich in nutrients, they are tasty and perfect for a variety of recipes. You can include sweet potatoes in your breakfast, lunch and supper recipes with ease.

    White potato

Surprise, surprise! White potatoes have way more potassium than sweet potatoes. A medium-sized sweet potato contains 941 milligrams of potassium. Like sweet potatoes, you can include white potatoes in most recipes including salads. Potato salad, anyone? Just let your white potatoes cool down (after backing them) for you to get the best dose of starch.
