Don’t Go Through The Door
Though it is jokingly called one of the signs of aging to walk into a room and forget why you entered, there is something to be said about this phenomenon. You’re not actually becoming more forgetful. It is the act of walking over a threshold—or through the doorway—that wipes your memory clean.
An interesting study took place comparing memory in real world and virtual reality (VR). Scientists asked participants to remember what object had been placed in a container and brought with that person through the doorway or carried the same distance in a single space. Participants who entered a new area, whether in reality or in VR, repeatedly forgot what they were holding than if they remained in a known area.
Though the reason for this memory loss is still unclear, researchers hypothesize that the very act of entering someplace new can reset our brains.
