The government and the food industry are doling out unscientific advice
Obesity has doubled around the world since 1980, and nearly 70 percent of the American population is considered overweight or obese. A lack of exercise and too many calories from unhealthy eating habits are the primary culprits. Yet, various health and governmental organizations still promote exercise as the sole solution to prevent weight gain and to lose weight.
The food and beverage industry is under increasing criticism for selling too many unhealthy products to the public. Companies like Coca-Cola have been exposed by the media for funding obesity research that promotes physical activity as the solution to obesity. The food and beverage industry believes it can avoid being criticized for selling unhealthy foods and beverages if they promote exercise as a solution to obesity.
The problem is that exercise is great for overall health, but it is not great for losing weight. Exercising while still consuming unhealthy food will still cause obesity. Exercise alone is not enough to burn these calories.
