Check for signs of skin cancer

The sooner skin cancer is identified and treated, the better your chances are in avoiding surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and even death. It is also a good idea to talk with your doctor about your risk for developing skin cancers and for advice on early detection.

It is also important to know what is normal for your skin and to be vigilant of any changes that may occur, as skin cancers rarely cause pain and are most frequently detected through sight and touch.

How to check your skin

Check your entire body, as skin cancer can occur anywhere, even in parts of the body that are not exposed to sunlight such as the bottoms of your feet, between fingers and toes and under nails.

Undress completely and make sure you have good lighting. Use a mirror to examine difficult to see areas such as the scalp and back, or get a family member, spouse or friend to help.
