Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Non-melanoma skin cancer can also start in squamous cells of the skin, which are flat cells found in the outer part of the epidermis. This type of cancer is called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and makes up about 20 percent of all skin cancers.

Raised Skin Growths

This is one of the earliest indicators of squamous cell carcinoma. These growths appear as raised or dome shaped patches of skin that are typically rough and crusty and may bleed easily when they are scraped. These patches of skin will also have irregular borders.

These raised skin growths can sometimes get mistaken for warts, however, unlike warts, these sores crust over and bleed. In addition, they may also appear as small red bumps that are firm to the touch and do not go away over time.
