Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Abdominal pain, bleeding, and cramps are common symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Many people confused IBD with IBS, but they are not the same. Inflammatory bowel disease is rarer and more severe. While 1 in 5 Americans are affected with IBS, only 1 in every 200 Americans get IBD.
Another reason inflammatory bowel disease is different from irritable bowel syndrome is the conditions underneath the umbrella term of IBD. There are diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis that are also forms of IBD. Doctors need to detect IBD using a scan or after performing an endoscopy, which involves inserting a tube with a light fixed to the end to it up the bowel, to detect ulcers or inflammation in the intestines.
