Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

This is a different kind of heartburn. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens when the valve that controls the flow of stomach acid from rising into your throat starts to weaken. If the valve cannot close completely, acid washes into the esophagus and can cause discomfort, burning in the stomach and throat, and heartburn. GERD is also known to cause pain and trouble when swallowing, a sour taste in the throat, or a sensation of having a lump in the back of the throat.

For those who experience GERD at night, you might also struggle with coughing, sleep problems, and laryngitis. Try cutting out rich and fatty meals from your diet, since such foods with exacerbate your condition. Symptoms can also be relieved with antacids or H2 blockers.
