The Types of Melanoma
There is more than one kind of melanoma. It is important to point out that melanoma does not occur only in places where the skin is exposed to the sun. People have gotten melanoma on their ankles, soles of the feet, and even inside their mouths.
Here are the types of melanoma:
• Cutaneous melanoma – the most common type of melanoma that occurs on the skin. Cutaneous melanoma can be split up into several different forms, such as superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma, lentigo melanoma, desmoplastic melanoma, and acral lentiginous melanoma.
• Mucosal melanoma – occurs in the mucous membranes of the body, such as the nasal passages, vagina, anus, throat, and mouth.
• Ocular melanoma – found in the eyes. This kind of melanoma has two categories: Uveral melanoma and the extremely rare conjuctival melanoma.
