Six Things You Should Throw Out Immediately

Expired Exfoliants, Lapsed Lipsticks and Other Gone-Bad Beauty Products

Have you done any research into how long different types of makeup and other beauty supplies can last? Most beauty products are only good for so much time and that window of viability is often shorter than most people would think. When you go through your beauty aids, first check everything for an expiration date. Next, ditch anything that you are unsure of like things that you haven’t used in a while or seem off in some way.

Here are the lifespans for most common forms of used makeup.

  • Mascara. 2-3 months or once it starts smelling or clumping up.
  • Foundation. Powders are good for up to 18 months, while liquid or cream forms are good for 6-12 months. An off smell is a signal to trash it.
  • Concealer or blush. Powders and sticks are good for two years while liquids are good for one year. Also ditch if the color seems off.
  • Face powder. You have two years.
  • Eye shadow. You have two years with powder but only 3-6 months with creams.
  • Eyeliner. Liquid or gel liner is good for no more than three months, while eyeliner pencils are good for 1-2 years with proper sharpening.
  • Lipstick and liner. You have one year or until the stick hardens or smells off.
  • Nail polish. This is good as long as it mixes up when shaken.
