Reddened and Inflamed Gums
Many people think that it is normal for their gums to look red or bleed whenever they floss and brush their teeth. However, this can actually be a symptom for periodontitis. This is particularly concerning because the bacteria that cause you to develop periodontitis are the same bacteria that cause you to develop heart problems.
Bacteria around the gums easily gets into the blood vessels and travels throughout the circulatory system. As the body tries to fight off the bacteria, it causes inflammation to develop. Over time, this inflammation can damage the blood vessels and cause all sorts of problems. The idea of losing teeth and developing heart problems from periodontitis is definitely scary, but thankfully, it is preventable. Regularly cleaning your teeth and visiting the dentist can be quite effective.
