Risk Factors for Epilepsy

Other Medical Factors

Infections within the nervous system can result in seizures. These infections include those that affect the brain, such as encephalitis, tuberculosis, or the spinal fluid, like meningitis. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can also cause epilepsy.

Malignant (cancerous) and benign tumors within the brain can also increase the risk of seizures.

Another medical factor that is often overlooked would be birthing factors. Children that are premature or born small or underweight, deprived of oxygen at some point, or have any brain abnormalities have a higher risk of epilepsy later in life.
