Degenerative Disorders

As with other issues that affect the function of the brain causing seizures, it should come as little surprises that degenerative disorders within the brain also pose a risk. These include Alzheimer’s disease, Tay-Sachs disease, Sturge-Weber syndrome, tuberous sclerosis, phenylketonuria (PKU), neurofibromatosis, and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.

In the case of Alzheimer’s, seizures usually occur within the later stages of the disease. The Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation states that an estimated 10 to 22-percent of people with Alzheimer’s will develop seizures.
