Risk Factors
There are several risk factors for developing pulmonary hypertension or idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. Adults between the ages of 30-60 are most at risk. Individuals who are overweight or who have a family history of hypertension have a greater chance of developing PH themselves.
Other risk factors include:
• Exposure to asbestos or silica
• Infection from parasites
• Infections from Hepatitis B or C
• Surgical removal of the spleen
• Thyroid diseases
• Genetic disorders, like Down syndrome and Gaucher disease
• Lifestyle habits, such as illegal drug use and smoking
• Some medications, like weight loss drugs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and chemotherapy medication
