Negative Health Effects of Overeating at Thanksgiving

Sleeping can become difficult

Overeating can upset your body’s natural sleep rhythm, making it hard for you stay asleep. Studies show that Thanksgiving dinner can take 12 or more hours to fully digest. This means it is possible that overindulging in holiday foods can prevent you from getting a good night’s zzz. That’s because your body will have to work overtime to digest all that food and burn off the excess calories. As your metabolism speeds up, you may also feel dizzy, hot, or sweaty. Digestive problems such as acid reflux can keep you awake with symptoms such as heartburn, stomach discomfort, or nausea. Needing to burp or pass gas periodically can also interrupt your sleep.
