Negative Health Effects of Overeating at Thanksgiving

A food coma can slow you down

A food coma, or postprandial somnolence, can happen after devouring a large meal, especially one high in protein, fats, and carbs. Symptoms of a food coma can last for several hours and include tiredness, sleepiness, lethargy, and extreme fatigue. Turkey meat contains a high level of an amino acid known as tryptophan. When eaten with carbs such as stuffing, it causes a rise in serotonin in the brain that saps your energy and result in a lethargic feeling.

Overeating may also cause a spike in blood sugar that can leave you feeling drowsy. If you’re a diabetic, it could aggravate diabetes symptoms and force you to take insulin to bring blood sugar levels down. So, avoid consuming more food than your body can process at one time. Unless, of course, you want to ruin your celebrations by having to spend the rest of the day on the couch in a lazy, vegetative state.
