Chronic or Recurring Respiratory Infections
Since COPD is the swelling and inflammation of the airways and air sacs, it makes sense that lung infections become more pronounced and chronic. Since the lungs can no longer function properly to remove contaminants from the air you are taking in, any bacteria, viruses, or even fungi can get stuck in the lungs.
From there, the viruses or bacteria or fungus proliferates. People with COPD often come down with pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and bronchitis. Colds and flu are also common.
