Express Gratitude, Spread Kindness
Gratitude is more than telling someone thanks. Gratitude is a sense of appreciation for everything that happens to you and those around you throughout the day, every day. When you are thankful for what you have, your happiness increases automatically. Do this: Make a list of five things that you are grateful for every day. These things don’t always have to be righteous. You might one day before very grateful for having an extra large mug to pour your coffee into after a long night of overwork. Upon completing this list, just read it over a few times. Embrace the emotions that you feel when reflecting on the little things that you find appreciation for, and you will be amazed by how quickly your mood is boosted.
At the same time, you can share your happiness with others by doing random acts of kindness. The reason why they are random is because you should do them without anticipating anything in return. Do them because it is right. Because you have the power to put a smile on someone else’s face. One study found that spending money on other people will make you happier than if you spend it on yourself, regardless of your culture or income level. But you should know within yourself that this is true. Giving the gift is so much better than receiving the present, right?
For that very reason, think of someone who could use a “pick-me-up.” Do something nice for them, whether that means taking them out for coffee, buying them a get well card, or giving them a call. You never know when someone else could use the boost, and by doing so, you get to share in their joy.
