Congential Hypothyroidism

Also known as neonatal hypothyroidism, this condition affects newborns. Some babies are born with a dysfunctional gland. Some have no gland at all. About 1 in 2,000-4,000 babies are born with neonatal hypothyroidism. Twice as many girls are born with the disease than boys.

Since the thyroid gland is necessary for proper body functioning and growth, growing up with an inactive or absent thyroid gland is extremely problematic. Poor growth and irreversible neurological conditions are often the result if the disease is left untreated. Early treatment can reverse any issues related to congenital hypothyroidism, but it is a condition that requires lifelong maintenance and treatment.
