Fatty Liver
A lack of protein can also lead to the accumulation of fat cells in the liver. When not diagnosed and/or left untreated over a long period of time, it can result in what is known as fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is a serious condition which can lead to inflammation, permanent scarring and even liver failure. More research is needed on the link between protein deficiency and a fatty liver as the reason for the link is currently unknown. However, some research has show that the underlying cause could be that the proteins that transport fat (known as lipoproteins) are unable to synthesize properly.
