Coughing
Persistent coughing is also an early sign of a virus, particularly the flu and other flu-like viruses. Unlike the common cold, the cough you get with the flu generally lacks phlegm but might induce wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. In later stages of more severe flu cases, the body might produce mucus, but this is rare and hardly seen as an early symptom.
For those with respiratory issues, like emphysema or asthma, be sure to get in contact with your doctor the moment you develop a dry cough. Your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to soften the severity of the symptoms. If you notice phlegm with a foul smell, call a medical professional. This is usually a sign of pneumonia or bronchitis and requires antibiotics.
