Common Causes of Diarrhea

Abdominal Surgery

Though rare, people can develop chronic diarrhea after undergoing abdominal surgery for the appendix, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, large intestine, stomach, or spleen. The diarrhea is believed to stem from there being more bile acids present in the body whenever certain organs are operated on or removed, such as the gallbladder. When there is too much bile acids present, the intestines are stimulated to secrete more fluids, and that can lead to a watery stool.
