Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Although inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often confused with the previously mentioned condition IBS, these two conditions are completely different. People who are afflicted with inflammatory bowel disease have structural damage to their digestive system due to an inflamed digestive tract. IBD is oftentimes used as an umbrella term for conditions like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, because both conditions cause the digestive tract to become inflamed and prohibit nutrients from being absorbed. However, the diseases are different.

Crohn’s disease can develop anywhere within the gastrointestinal tract. Ulcerative colitis targets the lining of the colon. Yet, inflammatory bowel disease is bound to cause diarrhea. The diarrhea may last up to four weeks and can contain blood or mucus as well. Other symptoms caused by IBD include weight loss, delayed growth in children, abdominal pain, and fever.

If you suspect you have IBD, it is best to get an appointment with your physician immediately.
