Traveler’s Diarrhea

Similar to food poisoning is traveler’s diarrhea, also called Montezuma’s Revenge. This typically happens to those who unknowingly drink contaminated water during travels or eating poorly cooked food. Most of the time, traveler’s overcome the illness within a few days of having returned home. If you recently traveled to a less-developed country and drank unclean or unfiltered water, you should call your doctor.

Traveler’s diarrhea usually lasts less than a week. Symptoms appear with 12 to 24 hours and can include vomiting. Sometimes, the appearance of the diarrhea may contain mucus or blood.

Always make sure your food is well cooked. If you have to use unfiltered water, boil it first. In some places, you may have to avoid using the tap water for everything, even brushing your teeth.
