Common Causes of Diarrhea

Certain Medications

There are a number of medications that can affect the digestive tract, thus leading to diarrhea. Common perpetrators include antibiotics and chemotherapy. Laxatives, antacids, blood pressure medications, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that contain magnesium can also cause diarrhea. However, it is not always a reaction to the drug itself but an additive, like an artificial flavoring. Since medication is thought to alter the gut microbiome and negatively affect the healthy bacteria, it could eventually lead to diarrhea and abdominal discomfort.

If you get diarrhea soon after starting a new medication, be sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible. You will want to change your medications, if possible.
