Common Causes of Diarrhea

Endocrine Disorders

Whenever your hormones are not balanced, it can result in diarrhea. Therefore, any disruption of the endocrine system, such as an endocrine disorder like diabetes, can also cause loose bowel movements. It is estimated that anywhere from 20-25 percent of people with diabetes also suffer from chronic diarrhea, because they do not have their diabetes under control or continue to eat poorly.

Another common endocrine disorder that causes diarrhea is hyperthyroidism, or hyperactive thyroid. When the thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormone, it can affect the metabolism, causing weight loss; cause tremors and heart palpitations; and will also stimulate the gastrointestional (GI) tract. When the GI tract is overstimulated, it causes diarrhea.

The last example is Addison’s disease, which is when the body cannot produce enough cortisol and other hormones within the adrenal gland. Since hormones are needed to regulate digestion and other digestive functions, not having enough can cause diarrhea.
