Autoimmune Diseases
There are many autoimmune diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, lupus, and diabetes that cause dry mouth. Autoimmune diseases attack many of the glands in the body’s endocrine system, which includes the salivary glands.
An autoimmune disease can attack the salivary glands and limit saliva production. This can allow the wrong type of bacteria to grow in your mouth. This will make you more susceptible to developing gingivitis or periodontitis.
